Romaniano y Agustín : amistad e intereses entre un curial rico y un curial pobre

Abstract

Romaniano y Agustín eran dos curiales de Tagaste unidos por una gran amistad. No obstante, el primero era mucho más rico que el segundo y esto condicionará dicha amistad, tras la cual, en realidad, se esconde un juego de intereses mutuos: en África, Agustín se amolda a Romaniano pues éste lo integra dentro de su clientela posibilitando con ello acabar sus estudios y más tarde, tras volver de ItaUa, consolidar las primeras comunidades agustinianas; en Italia, en cambio, Romaniano, inserto en un proceso judicial, precisa del apoyo del círculo de Símaco y se aviene a las exigencias de Agustín. Este juego de intereses dejará su huella en las primeras comunidades agustinianas de África así como en la obra del obispo de Hipona.

Romanianus and Augustine were two curiales of Thagaste with a great bond of filendship. Nevertheless, Romanianus was much richer than Augustine. This determines their filendship and behind this actually there is a mutual interest: in Africa, Augustine adapts a Romanianus as he integrates him into his clientele making possible to finish his studies and later, once back from Italy, to consolidate the rising augustinian communities. Whereas in Italy, Romanianus, inside judicial proceedings, needs the support of Symmachus' circle and he agrees with the demands of Augustine. This mutual interests will mark the first augustinian communities and the literary work of the bishop of Hippo.
